13 Apple Watch tips for Moms

February 12, 2021Family, For Mama, Reviews

I’m sort of a tech junkie.

When I was a web designer, I spent a good part of my day learning and exploring new technologies such as tablets, laptops, computers and watches. I’ve had my fair share of different smart watches but the Apple Watch is my favorite smartwatch that I’ve owned. It has definitely improved my productivity!

Apple Watch Series 6 / 40mm

This is the Apple Watch that I use. I recently upgraded mine because my old one was almost 4 years old. The battery life on it just wasn’t that great anymore. I decided to buy myself this exact one for Christmas! I’ve put together a list of Apple Watch tips for moms that will make your life easier (or at least a little!) and improve your productivity.

Customize your watch face

Customization of your watch face is my favorite feature in the Apple Watch. It’s a fun way to change up your watch face to match your interests and personality. You don’t have to use a preset watch face, although some of them are pretty cool. You can totally make it customized for you.

In the watch settings, you can select which photo folder to display on your watch face. Personally, I use the “favorites” folder because it’s easy. Any photo I mark as “favorite” gets displayed on my watch. So every time I look at my watch, I get to catch a glimpse of a family photo. You can also customize it to show the date, time, weather, steps, calendar events, and etc. For my view, I like to display the date, time and my step count.

Use it as a controller for your music

When you have your jams going on in the background, you can easily change the song by controlling it with your Apple Watch. When I have my phone connected to my bluetooth speaker or headphones, I can change the song without having my phone. This is awesome while working out. I can be handsfree while I’m going on a walk, jog or doing a bodyweight workout.

Use it to achieve your health/fitness goals

My current health and fitness goal is to drink two big bottles of water a day and to get at least 10,000 steps. I use two apps called “Pedometer” and “Drink Water Reminder”  to track my steps and water intake. Throughout the day, my watch will remind me to take a drink of water! It’s easy to forget.

I have been using my Apple Watch to track my fitness and health goals for the last four years. So now I make the correlation of a “healthy day” with my watch because it helps me track and reach my goals every day.

Disconnect yourself from your mobile device

As counterintuitive as this sounds, using the Apple Watch has helped me disconnect from my phone. I recently started turning off notifications on my social media accounts to help me minimize screen time but I also will keep my phone at the kitchen counter while we’re doing family activities. Whenever I get any kind of notification, I’ll catch a quick glimpse of it on my watch and get back to them later when I’m alone.

Handsfree texting and calling

Related to my tip above, I love that you can answer and text handsfree to calls and messages on the Apple Watch! This functionality also helps not miss phone calls, especially when you’re busy with the family. With the Apple Watch, you can pick up and directly talk into the watch just like a phone.

Use it to take a photo

Mom is finally in the picture! We all have a bunch of pictures of kiddos and their dad right?! What about mama? The camera app in the Apple Watch allows you to take a photo from your phone! It has a 3 second timer on default and takes a burst of photos so that you can choose your picture perfect frame. I love this feature for a selfie too.

Use it find your phone

THIS ONE. I know it might sound silly, but the Apple Watch is a life saver to help find your phone! I am pretty forgetful in the mornings or when I have somewhere I need to be. It’s hard. Packing your kid’s things, making sure they have snacks and activities, or making sure you have enough diapers just in case a blow out occurs. You end up forgetting about your own things. With the Apple Watch, you can ping your phone and it will make a loud sound on your phone. My daughter loves grabbing our phones and leaving them in random places, so this functionality is also useful for finding that sneaky hiding spot.

Use the “toddler mode“

Who else’s kids are just mesmerized by screens? My daughter loves to touch screens. She will pretend she is reading something. It’s the cutest thing, but sometimes it unlocks (or locks my phone) or opens random apps. The Apple Watch has a “water” mode (for when you’re swimming or in the shower) and it disables accidental screen interactions. I love using the water mode as my “toddler mode” so nothing accidentally opens when my little one is with me.

However, the water mode is really great too. You can do activities that involve water without worrying that the water will accidentally open anything.

Use to navigate while driving

The Apple Watch is great when it comes to navigation while driving. I never use the built in navigation system in my car anymore because it’s just easier and more accurate using the GPS technology in my phone. Once you set up your destination in the maps app, the Apple Watch will sync with the map apps on your phone, notifying you when to merge or turn. I love this functionality because I don’t have to look at my screen to figure out where I’m going.

Use it as a timer

Especially in the kitchen. I found this really helpful while cooking because I can just say, “Siri, set timer for 9 minutes”  while i’m cooking pasta or rice. The watch will vibrate and alert you when the timer is done.

Use it for notifications and reminders

I always use my Apple Watch to remind me to do things such as call my mom back, pick up my prescription, etc. You can also select which apps you’d like to get notifications from. I use notifications for my calls, messages, emails, exercise and water intake.

Use it to accessorize

I love switching up my watch bands. There are so many ways to change up a look to be casual, sporty and even dressy. Making something fashionable just makes you want to wear it even more. I love stacking bracelets with my watch!

Here are a few of my favorite bands:

I hope some of these tips will help you become more productive using your Apple Watch. Let me know if you have any other tips that you swear by!
